Update of Feifei

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Feifei has been hospitalized since last week because of a bladder infection. Doctors say repeated infections put her in a very high risk category. She barely made it this time. But she is doing better and her condition is good.

Truck Crash October 2006

FeifeiIn October 2006, Xiang Meifei (affectionately called Feifei pronounced Fayfay) was struck by a mining truck that was traveling too fast down a small street. The truck ran over Feifei and tore her left leg with part of her left hip from her body.

Feifei critically needs urinary tract, colon, vagina, and rectum reconstruction surgery to survive. Hospitals equipped and staffed to perform the complex surgeries are few in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong). Generally, Chinese hospitals do not provide treatment without payment in advance.

Feifei's Personal Profile

Full Name: Xiang Meifei

Sex: Female

Birthdate: December, 2000

Mother's Name: Luo Shuqin

Father's Name: Xiang Hong

Location: Wanzhou, Chongqing District, China (formerly part of the Sichuan Province).

Medical Condition: Feifei is unable sit erect and cannot walk with crutches. She fights infections on a daily basis. Local doctors are reluctant to provide basic medical care because of her high risk condition.

Immediate Medical Needs: Urinary tract, colon, vagina, and rectum reconstruction are essential. As "Friends of Feifei", our wish list includes a hip and prosthetic leg plus some good rehab.

Prognosis: Feifei is stable and cheerful. Doctors estimate that she may die of infections within a year if she is unable to obtain the re-constructive surgery.

Lifestyle/Living Condition: Feifei lives with her mother on the 9th floor of their apartment building -- no elevator.
  • Their 600 square foot apartment has two bedrooms, electricity, and one air conditioner.

  • Electricity availability is unstable which compounds the risk of infections during humid warm months.

  • Drinking water is available only when water is boiled or delivered.

Caregiving: Feifei is cared for by her Mother and Grandfather. Her Grandfather rides a bicycle two hours to her home every other day to care for her while her mother works at her job.
